When Portland’s cargo bike scene started to gel in 2011, one of many coolest byproducts was one thing referred to as the Catastrophe Reduction Trials.

It was round that very same time in 2011 when a horrible earthquake and tsunami struck Japan and several other information shops reported how gross sales and use of bicycles boomed within the aftermath. We grabbed maintain of the story and started pushing the narrative that bikes might play a key position in Portland’s catastrophe response. Due to some superb Portlanders who had simply the right combination of search-and-rescue, prepper, cargo biking, and do-gooderism vibes, DRT was born and held for the primary time in June 2012. It wasn’t lengthy till the development was acknowledged by even the Metropolis of Portland Bureau of Emergency Administration (PBEM).

After a couple of years of silence, I heard from organizers final week that DRT is coming again! A date of June 11, 2022 has been set and judging from the planning that’s already occurring, I can inform that is going to be an excellent occasion. The fundamental thought is that individuals compete in several classes (household, e-bike, cargo/non-cargo bike, and so forth…) and should navigate a course that assessments their abilities. The obstacles embrace issues like carrying your bike and cargo over a barrier, going off-road, loading awkward objects, wayfinding, and so forth. The occasion is about up like a catastrophe restoration drill meant to simulate what emergency specialists consult with as a “day 4 provide run”.

The 2022 version will likely be primarily based within the Cully Neighborhood and will likely be held in coordination with PBEM and the Cully Neighborhood Emergency Staff (NET).

“DRT PDX ‘22 strives to make the strongest case ever for cargo bikes as supreme instruments of citizen-involved catastrophe restoration,” reads an announcement from organizers. “Realism is the order of the day.”
